FREY ART STUDIO

Frey Art Studio was created to provide Producers with a convenient, flexible means of equipping an Art Director/Set Designer (specifically speaking, Chad S. Frey) with the necessary resources to perform the job for which he is hired. Rental rates are base priced at $250/week and Equipment Inventory is customized to meet the needs of each Production based on the understood requirements of each project at the time of hire. Reasonable effort is always made to include the equipment necessary for completion of assignments in a timely manner at the most cost effective price to the Production.

Our Customizable Rates include the rental of Traditional Drawing Equipment, Computer/Digital Design Equipment & Software, Cameras, Reference Library, Materials Samples Library, Vehicle/Transportation (Los Angeles productions only), and Cellular Telephone. Rates do not cover cost of fuel, expendables (printer ink, CDs, paper, pencils, etc.,) or project specific research items and materials.

It should be noted that the majority of this equipment can not be rented through other sources. Purchase of design equipment and software from an outside vendor(s) is always an option for Production to follow as I am always willing to work in the manner that Production deems best.

In the days of the Studio System the “Employer” (the Studio) provided its Art Department Staff with all necessary resources, equipment and materials to perform their prescribed tasks. These items included not only pencils, paper and drawing equipment but also training, reference libraries, material samples, printing services, transportation and photography services.

With the demise of the Studio System and the rise of the freelance Art Department, the financial burden of providing, transporting, storing, insuring and maintaining resources and equipment (as well as any specialized computer training necessary to perform design work in today’s competitive industry) has fallen to the individual Art Director, Set Designer and Illustrator as temporary “Art Departments” are set up for each production. Over the last decade this financial burden has increased dramatically as the use of cutting edge digital technology (including computers, software, digital cameras, hi-resolution printers, etc.) has become the expected norm from many Producers, Directors and Production Designers.

As the amount of time allotted to pre-production continues to shrink Producers and Production Designers are at a greater risk of failure if the Art Department Staff is not adequately supplied with the items, training & equipment they need in order to perform their tasks and “deliver.”
